KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Pets face different hazards and risks with all the excessive heat and humidity too.

There are several different?signs to look for when a pet could be overheating. Panting and difficutly breathing is one of the first and main symptoms. Another sign is frothing and extra saliva at the mouth. If you suspect any of these symptoms, immediately get?your pet into a cool area and give them plenty of fresh water. A cool wet towel is also suggested to get their body temperature back to normal.

The sun rays beating down on the cement and asphalt can also play on the pet's paws. Keeping your pet off of these hot surfaces as much as possible is the best idea. The hot surfaces can lead to paws developing blisters. These blisters?tend to crack and dry out easily, which?could lead to bleeding and even infection. If your pet is sensitive to hot surfaces, paw protectors and paw booties are available to help protect their paws from the outdoor surfaces.

Pets are also susceptible to getting a sunburn. During the summer months, some pet owners feel that they should?cut their pet's hair shorter. You want to check with your Veteranian or do some research on?your pet breed before cutting their hair shorter because they can acquire a sunburn. If you're wondering how to tell if your pet may have sunburn, it is quite simple. They turn red and experience the same symptoms you would. Treatment is also the same as well.

Missy Decker, Animal Shelter Manager, says, "A lot of animals have a natural insulator with their coat, so sometimes you're doing them more harm than good by removing that. You have the risk of them getting sunburn."

Fresh water is number one for pets that are kept outdoors. For working pet owners, setting up multiple fresh water buckets in different areas is key. If all the water sources are kept together and?one happens to fall over, the pet would lose all of its water sources. A shaded area is also the next best suggestion for pets kept outdoors.

For indoor pets that may not be able to be in an air conditioned environment, pet owners should open windows to allow a flow of fresh air into their home. Also, running a fan near the pet is recommended. Abundant fresh water is also required to help keep pets remaining healthy during the hot summer months.
