Lavabit reinstates service briefly so users can download emails, change passwords

Lavabit to Briefly Reinstate Services for Data Recovery

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Beginning today, Ladar Levison, founder of Lavabit LLC, will begin the process that will allow former users of Lavabit to briefly access their account and recover data lost from the initial shutdown.

To begin this process, the user will first be allowed to change their password during a 72 hour period, beginning tonight at 7:00 PM Central. This step was created due to recent events in the news that have lead people to believe that their account information may have been compromised. If users are indeed concerned that their account information has been compromised, this will allow them to change their account password on a website with a newly secured SSL key. Following the 72 hour period, Thursday, October 17th, the website will then allow users to access email archives and their personal account data so that it may be preserved by the user.

This comes in the wake of the abrupt shutdown of Lavabit this past August, wherein many were left without a way to access their sensitive data. For those who used Lavabit's email service, they were left without a way to access information after the shutdown. When asked about how his users felt about the loss of personal data, Mr. Levison said "I'm in the same boat as them. I used my Lavabit email account for 10 years. It was my only email account."

Former users are advised to visit the website https://liberty.lavabit.com to begin the process of recovery.

Al-Qaida Suspect Captured In Libya Will Be Tried In New York

Abu Anas al-Libi, a suspected leader of al-Qaida who was seized by U.S. special forces during a raid in Libya earlier this month, is now on American soil and will face trial in New York on charges related to 1998 bombing attacks on two U.S. embassies in Africa, a U.S. official tells NPR's Carrie Johnson.

After his capture on Oct. 5, al-Libi spent several days on a U.S. Navy ship undergoing interrogation. Now he's in New York, where he is expected to appear in court early this week, Carrie reports for our Newscast unit. The suspect's given name is Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai.

Update at 3:35 p.m. ET: Al-Libi Has Hepatitis C

Citing a U.S. official, Carrie tells us that al-Libi left the Navy ship on Saturday and that he has "a number" of medical conditions including hepatitis C, for which he is receiving treatment.

Multi-Sport SOAR Program Slated for Quesnel Elementary School Visit with Minister for Community, Sport and Cultural Development In Attendance 

SOAR (Sharing Our Activities and Resources), a multi-sport collaboration between Tennis, Golf and Curling, set for four-day interactive session at Red Bluff Lhatko Elementary in Quesnel

Richmond, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)—The cooperative multi-sport program SOAR (Sharing Our Activities and Resources) will be in Quesnel, British Columbia from October 6-9, 2013 to deliver grassroots Tennis, Golf and Curling programming with the Minister for Community, Sport and Cultural Development Honourable Coralee Oakes in attendance.

SOAR, a collaborative multi-sport delivery program created by British Columbia’s Not-for-Profit bodies representing Golf (British Columbia Golf), Tennis (Tennis BC) and Curling (Curl BC), brings age-appropriate modified equipment to elementary schools to promote participation in each sport. The program visits remote areas of the province at an affordable cost to schools.

Funded by viaSport, SOAR, in partnership with the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council, will be visiting the Red Bluff Lhatko Elementary School in Quesnel starting Sunday, October 6^th with a full-day comprehensive certification program for interested community sport individuals who seek to facilitate all three sports following the departure of the program. Complimenting the theory education will be practical, in-class sport whereby leaders will be mentored in the delivery of all three sports to Red Bluff Lhatko Elementary students starting with Tennis on Monday, October 7^th, Golf on Tuesday October 8^th and Curling on Wednesday October 9^th.

Attending Monday’s in-class Tennis programming will be the Minister for Community, Sport and Cultural Development Honourable Coralee Oakes. Oakes, the MLA for Cariboo North and a resident of Quesnel, will get the opportunity to witness the implementation of  fundamental movements in alliance with the Canadian Sport 4 Life Model.

“Learning a sport is something that stays with a child for a lifetime,” said Oakes.

“Just like riding a bike, learning to swing a golf club or throw a curling rock sticks with you. That focus on skill development for lifelong benefit is what makes SOAR such a valuable program. Our government strongly encourages healthy, active lifestyles for all British Columbians. We want kids to develop confidence in their abilities, and the SOAR program is a perfect fit.”

Also in attendance over the four days of SOAR programming will be Sue Griffin, Executive Director of Tennis BC who like the Honourable Coralee Oakes, sees value in a collaborative approach to delivering grassroots sports to all communities in the province.

“Working together with our partners in SOAR provides Tennis BC with a unique opportunity to deliver key fundamental movements in sport to young children in a fun, interactive environment,” stated Griffin.

“If they have fun while learning basic movements, hopefully we’ll inspire them to continue to be active and encouraged to play.”

Playing an integral role in continued sustainability of the SOAR program in the northern regions of British Columbia is the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council. Through a contribution agreement with SOAR, the Council has made avail key funding that provides the opportunity for SOAR to enter schools like Red Bluff Lhakto Elementary at a very minimal user fee. As a result of in-class introduction to the three sports, children experience and learn skills to use at local facilities within their community.

“Many smaller Aboriginal communities throughout the province don’t have access to Tennis, Golf or Curling facilities. This unique program has been a great opportunity for Aboriginal Youth to try a sport that they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to experience,” mentioned Joe Akerman. Manager of Regional Engagement with the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council.

“The SOAR facilitators are well trained over a 4 day period and do a great job of including all participants, whether they are a seasoned athlete or new to the sport being presented.”

Summer Baseball: Ashland Legion rolls past Weston

Evan Park threw a two-hit shutout, retiring 12 straight batters during one stretch, as Ashland blanked visiting Weston 9-0 in a Zone 5A Legion game on Friday night.

Ben Smith and Tim Moberg both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Steve Mahoney went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Reed Pike went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Ashland (5-4).

Leading 3-0, Post 77 broke it open with four runs in the fifth inning started by Smith?s leadoff homer.

HUDSON 6, WATERTOWN 1: Austin Bruneau pitched a complete game, striking out five and allowing just three hits and two walks and Kyle Sullivan drove in four runs as Hudson (9-0) beat visiting Watertown in a Zone 5 game.

Sullivan had a two-run triple in the first inning and a two-run double in the third inning for Hudson, which led 4-0 after one inning and 6-0 after three. Ryan Wardwell had a two-run single in the first inning, going 2-for-3 with two runs for Post 100.

BELLINGHAM 8, MARLBOROUGH 4: Taylor Sutherland allowed just one hit and four walks in six innings for Bellingham (6-1-1) for Central Mass. Senior Babe Ruth non-division win at Marlborough (5-3).

Michael Ryan went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and a home run for Bellingham, Joe Mangine went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Kevin Valentine went 2-for-3 with a double for Bellingham.

Marlborough was led by Mike Yates, who went 2-for-2.

NATICK 10, MILFORD 4: Tommy Ranucci pitched five strong innings, allowing one earned run on the mound, and also scored two runs as Natick (3-5) rallied to beat visiting Milford (2-6-1) in a CMSBR non-division game.

Milford led 4-0 before Natick pushed across nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, led by a David Reynolds two-run single. Kyle Dembrowski added an RBI double in the fifth for the final margin.

Milford got a single and a run scored apiece from Cole McNanna and Alex Croteau, while Mike Branch tripled.

FRANKLIN 5, HOLLISTON 3: Pat O?Reilly scattered eight hits with six strikeouts for the complete-game win as Franklin (1-5) defeated Holliston (3-4) in a CMSBR South matchup.

Kyle Wardrop went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, and Cam Bean and Anthony Saster had two hits each for Franklin.

Mike Sancomb and Tyler Perry both had two hits for Holliston (3-4) with Perry collecting an RBI single.

MEDFIELD 12, HOPKINTON 0 (5 INN.): John McMahon tossed a two-hit shutout and catcher Sean Harrington went 3-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs as Medfield (7-1) routed host Hopkinton in a CMSBR game mercy ruled after five innings.

Paul Hardiman had two hits, two stolen bases, three runs scored and two RBIs for Medfield, which scored five runs in the second to build a 7-0 lead.

Microsoft releases 'refined' Windows, revs up developers

SAN FRANCISCO/SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp released a test version of its Windows 8.1 software on Wednesday, bringing back the "start" button and adding a host of features it hopes will appeal to users, while spurring developers into writing more applications for it.

The updated Windows, which was signaled at the end of May, is aimed chiefly at soothing traditional computer users, many of whom were unsettled by Microsoft's shift towards a new "tile"-based interface that works best on touch-enabled devices, but left fans of the old-style desktop confused.

"Since we announced and shipped Windows 8, suffice it to say, we pushed boldly and yet what we found was we got a lot of feedback from users of those millions of desktop applications," said Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, opening the company's annual developer conference in San Francisco.

"If I was to put it in coffee terms, 'Why don't you go and refine the blend here?' Let's remix the desktop and your modern application experience. Let's balance them better," said Ballmer, summing up user feedback.

The result is the reinstatement of the 'start' button, and easier ways to find and access applications, along with a highly improved search function, some of which was announced last month.

Microsoft shares closed up 2 percent at $34.35 on Nasdaq, outpacing generally higher markets.

Ballmer also promised a "rapid release cycle" for Windows in future, abandoning its previous policy of making new versions of Windows every three years, in an effort to match Apple Inc and Google Inc.

THUMBS-UP FROM WINDOWS FANS

The response from the thousands of developers at the conference in San Francisco was broadly positive, although attendees tend to be Windows die-hards.

"Of course, they're playing some catch up (with Apple and Google). They have been lagging behind for years now," said Jorgen Nilsson, a manager at UK-based Aveva AB, a firm that makes computer-aided design software applications. "But this release is driving it forward instead of catching up and making it work for business and personal use. This is looking really good now."

Part of Microsoft's problem has been persuading developers to create apps for Windows 8 and the little-used Windows Phone, given that almost all smartphone and tablet owners are using Apple's iOS or Google's Android system.

Microsoft also said Wednesday that Facebook Inc had finally agreed to work on an app especially for Windows, which should be available this autumn. That is one factor that attract the more than 1 billion Facebook users to Windows-based tablets.

"I feel like Microsoft can actually seriously compete in the mobile ecosystem now," said Manav Mishra, director of engineering at the Barnes & Noble Inc unit that makes apps for its Nook e-reader. "Windows 8.1 finishes the journey Windows 8 started and I think it evens the playing field for Microsoft quite a bit, which wasn't the case before."

MORE EVANGELISM NEEDED

But not all developers are convinced that Windows or Windows Phone are worth the trouble, given the massive built-in audience using iPhones, iPads and Android devices.

"I haven't really considered it, No," said Sam Redfern of Psychic Software, maker of the 'Let's Break Stuff!' game, available on Android, iOS and even the BlackBerry PlayBook, when asked about developing for Windows. "It never seemed like a particularly worthwhile undertaking, in terms of potential revenue."

Markus Persson, developer at Mojang, whose 'Minecraft - Pocket Edition' is a top-seller on both iOS and Android, agreed, saying Microsoft's market was too "tiny. Both Symbian and Blackberry have more users than Windows Phone."

Neither man attended Microsoft's developer conference.

Ballmer said on Wednesday that the Windows Store was approaching 100,000 apps. Meanwhile, Apple is nearing 1 million, with Android not far behind.
