PST: Arlo White dishes on MLS stadiums

TOPIC:?MLS stadiums

Arlo White and the rest of the NBC Sports Network crew are at BC Place for tonight?s big Cascadia Cup showdown, as Seattle visits Vancouver.?(9 p.m. ET)

Recently remodeled BC Place is one of 14 facilities built or remodeled specifically for Major League Soccer. Nothing has driven MLS growth more than the ongoing facility initiative. So we asked White three quick questions about MLS stadia.

There really are some terrific grounds now for MLS watching. Which are your personal favorites?

I worked in Seattle for two years and will forever have a soft spot for the mind- blowing experience that is CenturyLink Field on game-day. But if that is the equivalent to baseball of the ?new Yankee Stadium,? then down I-5 is Jeld-Wen Field, which would be the ?Fenway Park,? with a wonderful, raucous, historic element to it on match day.

I would go with the new soccer specific stadiums, though. I think Houston have done a tremendous job downtown. Kansas City ? which I somehow haven?t been to yet, which is a shame ? is of course a tremendous stadium.

But for me, I?ve always loved Red Bull Arena. When I toyed with the idea of coming over to work in Major League Soccer a few things tipped the balance. One of those elements was the construction of Red Bull Arena. I thought, nobody is going to spend $250 million on a stadium if they don?t really mean it, and if they aren?t serious about soccer being a success in New York, in New Jersey, and the United States.

It?s the prototype MLS arena for me. It?s 25,000, it is done to the highest specifications. And when it is full it creates terrific atmosphere. They just need to fill it more regularly. For me, that is the flagship soccer specific stadium in Major League Soccer.

Our stadiums here are modeled on European grounds. But we do stadiums pretty well here, too. Is there anything at all that European grounds could learn from the newly developed North American soccer facilities?

It has been huge era, a decade or maybe 15 years, of building new stadiums and modernizing the arenas in Europe leagues. I can speak more of the English leagues than anywhere else and there are some massively impressive new stadiums. Most of them are fairly identical, but they do the job.

The MLS stadiums, I?d like to see a little more personality maybe, but I know there are economic reasons a lot of them look fairly similar.

In terms of Europe and learning things from MLS, I think in MLS the have built the stadiums they require, but they certainly do the job. I wouldn?t say they are better or worse than anything in Europe.

A pair of prominent markets on the East Coast, D.C. United and New England, are in dire need of new grounds. Is there any reason to believe new facilities for New England and D.C. United cannot breathe fresh life into those organizations, a la Sporting Kansas City and the amazing franchise revitalization we?ve seen there?

I have absolutely no doubt that it would. I went to CommunityAmerica Ballpark [outside Kansas City, where the club played for three years] a couple of times and announced games out of a metal container. It was an interesting experience! ? There was enthusiasm there, but there wasn?t the passion or the raucous atmosphere we see we see at Livestrong, which is such a terrific stadium.

D.C. have passionate fans and I see it at RFK stadium every time I go there. I just don?t see it in the huge numbers that were once there.

There is a huge passion for soccer around the Boston area and in New England. But they have to go out to Gillette Stadium, which is painful to get to. And the crowds aren?t anywhere near as big as they should be.

So if those two clubs, with those two passionate fan bases with their potential fan bases, get gleaming new homes which are accessible to the majority to the fans, I think you are going to see a tremendous upturn in atmosphere and interest in soccer in those markets.

Hubble portrays a dusty spiral galaxy

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has provided another outstanding image of a nearby galaxy -- NGC 4183, seen with a beautiful backdrop of distant galaxies and nearby stars. Located about 55 million light-years from the sun and spanning about eighty thousand light-years, NGC 4183 is a little smaller than the Milky Way. This galaxy, which belongs to the Ursa Major Group, lies in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici (The Hunting Dogs).

NGC 4183 is a spiral galaxy with a faint core and an open spiral structure. Unfortunately, this galaxy is viewed edge-on from Earth, and we cannot fully appreciate its spiral arms. But we can admire its galactic disk.

The disks of galaxies are mainly composed of gas, dust and stars. There is evidence of dust over the galactic plane, visible as dark intricate filaments that block the visible light from the core of the galaxy. In addition, recent studies suggest that this galaxy may have a bar structure. Galactic bars are thought to act as a mechanism that channels gas from the spiral arms to the center, enhancing star formation, which is typically more pronounced in the spiral arms than in the bulge of the galaxy.

British astronomer William Herschel first observed NGC 4183 on 14 January 1778.

This picture was created from visible and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.4 arcminutes wide.

This image uses data identified by Luca Limatola in the Hubble's Hidden Treasures image processing competition.

(AP) ? The newly built Barclays Center is the home of the Brooklyn Nets, and the team's co-owner, Jay-Z, christened the venue Friday night in uniform, sporting a Nets hat and jersey as he rapped two dozen jams onstage in front of thousands.

Jay-Z performed for an excited and rowdy crowd of 18,000, wearing a jersey that featured his last name, Carter, and the number four. It was his first of eight shows at the venue.

As he emerged onstage, a video highlighting some of Brooklyn's historical moments ? like when it was named an official borough of New York City ? played in the background. There were also pictures of famous faces who were born in Brooklyn, from Michael Jordan to Al Capone to Aaliyah to Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys.

Jay-Z opened the show with the hometown anthems "Where I'm From," a song about his upbringing in Brooklyn's Marcy projects complex, and "Brooklyn Go Hard." He followed that with a tribute to one of Brooklyn's icons: the late Notorious B.I.G. He performed some of the rap vet's hit "Juicy" as the crowd joined in.

"Sing loud so he can hear you in heaven," said Jay-Z, who also held a moment of silence for the rapper, who was shot to death in 1997.

Another Brooklynite ? Big Daddy Kane ? made an appearance, performing songs like "Ain't No Half Steppin'" and "Warm It Up, Kane." He received a roaring cheer from the crowd when performing old-school dance moves with two dancers in all white.

Jay-Z said Friday's concert was incomparable to most of his other top-level performances, including the Grammys, Glastonbury or Coachella.

"Nothing feels like tonight," he told the crowd multiple times.

The audience was excited and wild, cheering on Jay-Z as blue laser lights beamed across the venue. A seven-piece band was placed a level above Jay-Z, who paced from left to right while performing jams like "Empire State of Mind," ''I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)," ''Izzo (H.O.V.A.)," ''99 Problems" and many others. Videos played on screens behind and above Jay-Z, while screens for fans in the higher sections ? though not large enough ? showed the rapper's performance on the left and right sides of the stage.

"I want to thank you, Brooklyn, New York City, for making me the man I am today," he said. "Like I said, everybody's from Brooklyn tonight."

A fan in the front section held up Jackie Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers jersey, immediately grabbing Jay-Z's attention. He asked the fan for it and said: "I promise I'll give it back."

"Brooklyn had their heart broken," he said as he held up the jersey and referred to the Dodgers leaving for Los Angeles after the 1957 baseball season. "We cried for so many years. ...Look how far we've come."

Jay-Z will perform at Barclays through Oct. 6 with the exception of Oct. 2.

(AP) ? More than 60,000 people are expected to descend upon Central Park on Saturday evening for a free concert featuring the Black Keys and Neil Young aimed at calling attention to poverty worldwide.

Dubbed the Global Citizen Festival, it also is slated to feature K'naan, Band of Horses and Foo Fighters. Video of the event is to be streamed worldwide.

The concert was scheduled around the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week and organizers used an innovative approach to ticket distribution so that many concert-goers had no choice but to learn about an array of global problems such as polio, malaria, child mortality and clean drinking water.

Anyone wanting free tickets had to register at globalcitizen.org, which then required users to watch videos or read information about poverty-related issues. Each time material was consumed, users could earn points toward a drawing for tickets. Points were also accumulated by sharing information via Twitter or Facebook.

"Our social media campaign has been off the charts," said Hugh Evans, CEO and co-founder of the Global Poverty Project. The approach demonstrates a new model for harnessing digital tools that may be repeated for other big events with political or social messages.

Organizers said more than 71,000 people had signed up online, resulting in more than 3.5 million page views. On average, they spent just over six minutes consuming content or sharing information. Nearly 200,000 pieces of information were shared on Facebook, and just a bit more than that on Twitter. About 170,000 people signed petitions via the site, and there were 98,000 videos viewed to completion.

Evans said the project achieved its goals, set out last year, of getting more than 100,000 people to take action related to extreme poverty while telling a new story about the challenges. To that end, the site conveys information in detailed, documentary-like accounts and uses an array of video, graphics and stories that are friendly for mobile and digital consumption.

Financially, he said, the project also achieved its yearlong goal ? working with an array of organizations like the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Earth Institute and Rotary International ? of garnering $500 million in commitments to help fight poverty.

So now what?

Evans said that he's hoping the audience, built online and at the concert, will continue efforts by tweeting President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to halve extreme poverty by 2015, which is the key U.N. anti-poverty goal. And Evans is working on an announcement in October or November about "a major rock band" getting involved with the anti-poverty efforts.

T-Mobile USA in $2.4 billion tower deal with Crown Castle

NEW YORK (Reuters) - T-Mobile USA is selling the rights to operate 7,200 of its wireless broadcast towers for $2.4 billion to Crown Castle International Corp to help fund a network upgrade and reduce debt at its parent Deutsche Telekom.

Crown Castle has the option to pay another $2.4 billion to buy the towers outright from T-Mobile USA at the end of the lease term for each tower - between 2025 and 2048 - under the deal announced on Friday.

Analysts said it was a good deal for T-Mobile USA, which is spending $4 billion on a network upgrade. They noted that the company has also been looking to become more financially independent from its parent, which had tried to exit the U.S. market the year before.

However, several analysts said that Crown Castle had over-paid, likely because another bidder had pushed up the price.

Evercore Partners analyst Jonathan Schildkraut said the company paid about $400 million more than he would have liked.

"As people start to pull apart the numbers, it doesn't look that great," Schildkraut said, but he added that Crown Castle "needed to do it for growth."

Deutsche Telekom said the deal would reduce its debt by about $2.4 billion or roughly 1.9 billion euros.

T-Mobile USA, the No. 4 U.S. mobile provider, has been struggling to stem customer losses as it has a tough time competing with bigger and smaller rivals.

It had been trying to raise money from a tower sale since its proposed purchase by AT&T Inc failed late last year because of regulatory opposition. It had also looked into selling the towers in early 2011 before it started the AT&T process.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter, according to the companies.

ROOM TO GROW

Crown Castle said it expects the towers to generate about $125 million to $130 million in adjusted funds from operations before financing costs in 2013.

JPMorgan analyst Phil Cusick said that while the price tag was at the high end of his expectations, it was mitigated by Crown Castle's strong growth outlook for the assets.

Crown Castle said the towers will have enough space to accommodate at least one additional wireless service provider customer on each tower, which would increase the leasing revenue it would receive without significant incremental capital.

As part of the deal, T-Mobile USA committed to maintaining its facilities on the towers for at least 10 years with annual rent increase provisions tied to the consumer price index. T-Mobile USA's rent includes the rights to complete its network upgrade on these sites.

"The deal is well structured to account for the inherent risks of purchasing a tower portfolio highly weighted to one carrier," Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Larsen said.

Deutsche Telekom said the company had multiple bidders for the assets, but declined to name them.

Analysts have said other companies that considered the towers included American Tower Corp and SBA Communications Corp.

Crown Castle shares fell 23 cents to $64.68 on the New York Stock Exchange after the news, while Deutsche Telekom shares closed down 1.6 percent in Frankfurt.

What is SMS?

You may have been using it for a long time, but maybe you call it ?texting?. Technically, it is known as SMS. But, what is SMS?

Short Messaging Service (SMS) provides the capability to send and receive text messages between mobile telephones over cellular networks. It was once used by carriers to send notifications of new voice messages down to smart cell phones, but SMS is now almost universally used by cellular subscribers around the world as a two-way personal messaging medium. It was created as part of the Global System for Mobile (GSM) Phase 1 standard.

The first short message was sent in December 1992 from a PC to a mobile phone on the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom. AT&T Wireless was the first national carrier to bring SMS to the United States.

The ?S? or ?short? part of SMS refers to the maximum size of the text message. With SMS, subscribers can send up to 160 characters of text when Latin letters, numbers or symbols are used, and 70 characters when non-Latin letters, numbers or symbols, such as Arabic or Chinese are used.

How Does SMS Messaging Work?

According to the website ?How Stuff Works,? even when you are not talking on your cell phone, the phone is continuously forwarding and receiving data. Your phone is communicating with a cell phone tower over a pathway called a control channel. This constant chatter between cell phone and tower is so that the cell phone system knows which cell your phone is in so that it can change cells as you move around. Every so often, your phone and the tower will exchange a packet of information that lets both the cell phone system and the cell phone know that everything is okay.

Your phone also uses the control channel for call setup. When someone tries to call you the tower sends your phone a message over the control channel that tells your phone to play its ringtone. The tower also gives your phone a pair of voice channel frequencies to use for the call.

The control channel also supports the passageway for SMS communications. When a friend texts you an SMS message, the message runs through the SMSC which then sends it to the tower. The tower then delivers the message to your cell phone as a small package of data on the control station. In the same way when you send a message, your phone sends it to the tower via the control station and it then goes from the tower to the SMSC and from there to its target.

In the same way instant messaging (IM) on the Internet has become a standard method of communication among U.S. teenagers. SMS will provide a choice that will grow the total messaging market. In some cases it will replace voice traffic and IM, as desktop-to-desktop IM is not conducive to mobility. Even desktop-to-mobile IM inhibits mobility because a cellular subscriber using a limited screen and keyboard cannot keep up with messaging traffic generated by a full-featured desktop system. Unlike SMS, IM clients operating on wireless devices have found them complex, cumbersome, and difficult to use.

QuickBooks Online Goes Global | Small Business Trends

Accounting software for small businesses has traditionally been focused on all things local ? local tax laws, local taxes, local accounting standards, and more. That?s why it can be difficult for many small businesses to go global or cross over borders, especially without taking the time to grow first.

However, small businesses received some good news this week when Intuit announced its new version of QuickBooks Online that is now available to businesses around the globe.

QuickBooks Online

This change means that small multinational businesses or businesses operating outside the U.S. can use the software to create localized invoices, pay bills, and track expenses based on standards from wherever the business is located. Users can personalize currency and formatting according to their country?s standards. The program can also help businesses process taxes, sales, and more.

This could mean big things for small businesses around the globe. Previously, features of QuickBooks and similar programs weren?t available to businesses headquartered outside the U.S. or a select few other countries. The new global version eliminates many of the borders and hoops that these small businesses had to jump through in order to become multinational or operate in other countries.

The program, which has already been used by businesses in over 130 countries since its beta launch in July, is also customized for local impact. This means that not only can users customize settings like languages, but they can also input specific cultural information so that they can get the most out of the program and make it meet the specific needs of their business?s home base.

The program maintains all the QuickBooks Online features that thousands of businesses already use, such as centralized forms, expense and income tracking, reporting tools, cloud usability, and more.

There are three different versions of the software available, including QuickBooks Simple Start, QuickBooks Essentials, and QuickBooks Plus. Costs start at $15 per month, and vary based on which features are needed.

Stephen's Blog ? Learning to Communicate

?

There is no such thing as a naturally good communicator. We are not born with the skills to get our message to others clearly, these things are learned. Yes, baby?s do have the ability to do motions and make facial expressions and display emotion, all of which are forms of communication, but naturally, they are not the best. Think about when you see a baby crying. Why is he crying? Is he hungry? Tired? Hurt? Even though the baby is communicating that he is not happy with something, we do not know what it is. Good communication comes through practice and learning.

?

The focus here is on learning. Learning to be a better communicator. If good communication is not born naturally with us, we must be able to learn it, somehow. ?This is something that is important to all people because we all strive to have our thoughts and ideas communicated effectively to others. If that is not a natural thing, we must then understand how to learn it. As people learn this, they become better communicators in their relationships.

As a communication scholar and a human being, I always wonder how I can share more of my thoughts and ideas, and how I can share them more effectively. As I try to make a name for myself in the working world now that I am getting closer to graduation, I want to be sure that potential employers see me as an effective communicator. So by learning this, I can understand how to accomplish it. As you read this, maybe you too can think about how being a better communicator can help you in some way. Maybe you can see it helping you build a stronger relationship with your significant other, or maybe you see communication helping you get a promotion at work.

John Grohol, the founder and editor-in-chief of the PsychCentral blog, said in a post that ?better communication . . . starts with one person making the effort to improve.? (Yes, I know that it is a psychology website, but I think that the ideas he lays out in the article still apply to this post quite well.) Grohol is talking about idea that it is a conscious decision to improve and to learn how to communicate better. If you read the post, he gives 9 good ways that will help you communicate better in a relationship, I recommend checking it out.

Julia Wood in her textbook ?Interpersonal Communication: Everyday Encounters? outlines 8 principles of interpersonal communication. The 8th reads: ?Interpersonal communication effectiveness can be learned.? This is saying what I have been describing above, that communication in our interpersonal relationships is not naturally occurring. That is, in order to communicate effectively we must learn how. So take for example the crying baby above. That baby will soon grow up to learn words and language. He must then be learn how those words can be used to tell others why he is unhappy. With language comes the ability to communicate more, more effectively, but only if you know how.

When I first started to understand the concept that effective communication is not learned, it hit me in a weird way. I had always thought that I can talk and write pretty well, thats all there is to it. However, in some cases and some of my interpersonal relationships, I am still (metaphorically speaking) a crying baby. I have not yet learned all there is to know about how to communicate my messages and ideas effectively. I think that if you can learn anything from this post, it is that you still can learn something. Interpersonal communication is a lifelong process that never stops or stalls. You must constantly adapt and change and learn new ways of communicating.

Small businesses to bear burden of health insurance

The Health Insurance Tax (HIT) on fully-insured premium markets imposed by Obamacare could raise $87 billion over the next ten years and also cost between 125,000 and 249,000 jobs by 2021, according to a study.

?Although the tax is formally structured as a fee on health insurers, recent analysis has determined that virtually all of the tax burden will be passed on to the purchasers of insurance,? says the study by the National Federation for Independent Business Research Foundation.

?The cost of health insurance is still a top ranking if not number one issue that?s probably the most unidentifiable per budget year,??Amanda Austin, director of federal public policy at NFIB, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

?They just don?t know what it?s going to be at renewal, what new costs are going to be borne out in their premium,? she said. ?And that?s the aggravation year in and year out, that they never seem to go down, they only seem to go up, and this will potentially only aggravate the overall cost factor.?

Small businesses and the self-employed comprise 87 percent of the fully-insured market. The NFIB study estimates the tax will raise the cost of employer-sponsored insurance by 2-3 percent, a cumulative cost of nearly $5,000 per family.

?It just seems to me as a small business owner that tax cuts always have a sunset, like the Bush tax cuts? I?ve never heard of anyone say a tax increase is expiring at the end of the year. They seem like they?re built in forever,? small business owner John Culler shared with The DC News Foundation.

Culler owns a small marketing and communications firm in West Virginia with 11 employees. Culler explained that he spends an average of $13,000 a year for family coverage for each employee. He said providing health insurance is both a good recruitment tool and the right thing to do.

?We?ve always felt it was the right thing to do,? he said, though now, ?It just keeps getting harder and harder.?

A coalition of small business advocates and interest groups have joined forces to get the tax repealed. Recently, there has been movement on Capitol Hill with a bipartisan bill with over 220 cosponsors in Congress.

?We want action next year, if not lame duck,? Austin told TheDC News Foundation.

?Business owners understand what this tax is and understand that it?s going to impact their premium and therefore they want their voice to be heard on it.?

?It was a bit of an irritation for us that small business and individuals, which are the main purchasers of fully insured plans, which is where the industry bares the risk, they?re absorbing most of it,? Austin said, recalling when the tax was being considered for the bill that would ultimately become the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

?We were very concerned about this because as an advocate for the business community, we know very well pass-through taxes and how these things are easily borne out to the end user,? Austin added.

She said about the result, ?this is a tax on business? how exactly did we arrive at this when we were trying to lower the cost for small business??

The Importance of Physical Therapy Supplies ~ The Suburban Jungle

Have you ever been in a serious accident or suffered a major neuromuscular injury? Hopefully you haven't, but the odds are good that someone in your life (including yourself) will be injured at some point.

When that happens, it's so important to seek quality care from a licensed?physician?and physical therapist. A physical therapist will help you with appropriate exercises and?rehabilitation. They will use Physical Therapy Supplies and their knowledge of human anatomy to get you back in top form.

They work with your doctor to create a plan to get you back to your old self - or maybe a better (more mobile) version of your prior self.

If you know someone that has been injured, offer to help them find an appropriate health care provider. Offer to help with daily chores or getting to appointments. Having your help will better allow them to heal, and they'll be more apt to help you if you end up needing assistance.

Most of all, take care of your joints and muscles now. Get plenty of regular exercise, and don't push things too far too fast. Eat high quality meals, get plenty of fresh air and sunlight, and stay active with your family and friends. An ounce of prevention is really worth a pound of cure.

Slipping in polls, Romney assures voters 'I care'

WESTERVILLE, Ohio (AP) ? Slipping in states that could sink his presidential bid, Republican Mitt Romney declared Wednesday that "I care about the people of America" and can do more than President Barack Obama to improve their lives. In an all-day Ohio duel, Obama scoffed that a challenger who calls half the nation "victims" was unlikely to be of much help.

Romney's approach reflected what he is up against: a widening Obama lead in polls in key states such as Ohio, the backlash from a leaked video in which he disparages Obama supporters as government-dependent victims, and a campaign imperative to make his policy plans more plain.

With under six weeks to go, and just one week before the first big debate, Obama's campaign reveled in the latest public polling ? but tried to crush any sense of overconfidence. "If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that," said campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

The day's setting was Ohio, where Obama's momentum has seemed to be growing. It's also a state no Republican has won the White House without carrying.

Romney went after working-class voters outside Columbus and Cleveland before rolling to Toledo. Obama rallied college crowds at Bowling Green and Kent State, reminding Ohioans their state allows them to start cast ballots next week. Early voting has already begun in more than two dozen other states.

For Romney, in his appearances and in a new TV ad in which he appeals straight to the camera, it was time for plain talk to contrast himself with Obama.

"There are so many people in our country who are hurting right now. I want to help them. I know what it takes," Romney told the crowd in Westerville. "I care about the people of America, and the difference between me and Barack Obama is I know what to do."

That message so late in the campaign ? a presidential nominee declaring his concern for all the people of the country ? was part of his widening effort to rebound from his caught-on-video comments at a fundraiser.

In those comments, made last May but only recently revealed, Romney said "47 percent of the people" pay no federal income tax, will vote for Obama no matter what, are victims, think the government must care for them and do not "take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

New opinion polls, conducted after the video became public, show Obama opening up apparent leads over Romney in battleground states, including Ohio and Virginia. And majorities of voters in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania say Romney's policies would favor the rich over the middle class or the poor.

Specifically in Ohio, two surveys show the president crossing the 50 percent mark among likely voters. A Washington Post poll found Obama ahead 52 percent to 44 percent among those most likely to turn out, and a Quinnipiac University/CBS News/New York Times poll showed a 10-point Obama lead among definite voters.

Noting anew the Romney video comments, Obama said Wednesday: "We understand that America is not about what can be done for us. It's about what can be done by us together, as one nation, as one people."

And he added: "You can't make it happen if you write off half the nation before you take office."

Romney was showing signs of picking up his pace.

He scheduled a blizzard of interviews with ABC, CBS and NBC, his second round of broadcast network appearances in three days after weeks of ignoring their requests. He also did interviews Tuesday with Fox News and CNN.

The new Romney TV ad, at 60 seconds, is a longer and softer approach in which he speaks about people struggling to pay for food and gas with falling incomes.

At one point on Wednesday, the two candidates spoke from different sections of northern Ohio at the same time, their scenery as different as their message.

At a factory in Bedford Heights, Romney appeared on a stage surrounded by visual evidence of Ohio's manufacturing base ? giant coils of steel wire, metal beams, yellow "caution" signs ? and spoke as machines whirred in the background. He appeared with Mike Rowe, an everyman TV personality and pitchman.

Obama appeared at two packed college basketball arenas, delivering his message first to a boisterous crowd of more than 5,000 at Bowling Green State University and then to 6,000 screaming supporters at Kent State University.

He said a student who introduced him broke his wrist during a game of ultimate Frisbee. Exhorting the crowd to vote, he said, "You got to play through injuries."

The campaigns tried, too, for footholds on other fronts.

Both sides kept up their attempts to paint each other as weak in dealing with China, efforts aimed at wooing support from working-class voters whose jobs might suffer from imports from China.

The Romney campaign has started setting up flat-screen TV monitors at its events to screen a video about his personal and business story. It was first aired at the Republican National Convention as a way to introduce him to America but went unseen by most viewers because it did not run during prime-time coverage.

Romney also focused Wednesday on interest paid on the national debt, a subject he hasn't regularly discussed in his standard campaign speech. His comments came after a Washington Post poll showed the federal debt and deficit are the one set of issues where he has an advantage over Obama with likely voters.

Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, took a sharper approach. He told radio host Sean Hannity that Obama was using hollow tactics to paint his opponents as evil.

"He's basically trying to say 'If you want any security in your life stick with me. If you go with these Republicans they're going to feed you to the wolves. It's going to be a dog-eat-dog society,'" Ryan said.

In recent weeks, Romney has lost his polling edge on the economy generally, with more people saying they now trust Obama to fix the nation's economic woes.

Fighting back, new Republican-leaning independent groups jumped in Wednesday with advertising aimed at voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are undecided now. The commercials join those from the campaigns and outside groups swamping a narrow and possibly shrinking map of competitive states.

"I will say that as time progresses, the field is looking like it's narrowing for them," said Psaki, the Obama campaign spokeswoman. "In that sense, we'd rather be us than them."

The president, though, did have his own ups and downs.

Air Force One aborted its approach into Toledo because of bad weather, forcing the commander of the presidential plane to circle the airfield.

The second try was a success without incident.

Obama: Disputed game means NFL needs regular refs

(AP) ? The embarrassing NFL referee saga and the disputed call that gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on Monday night has reached the campaign for the White House, with President Barack Obama deeming it "terrible" and declaring it was time to get regular officiating crews back on the job.

"I've been saying for months we've got to get our refs back," Obama said as he returned to the White House from an appearance before the United Nations. In a tweet that went out under his initials, Obama said: "NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon."

In a rare moment of agreement with Obama, presidential rival Mitt Romney and GOP running mate Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin native, also said it was time to bring back the "real refs." The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contract expired. The league has been using replacement officials, who have come under increasing criticism over the way they handled some games.

"I sure would like to see some experienced referees, with NFL experience, come back on to the NFL playing fields," Romney said in an interview with CNN.

Ryan added a partisan note, using the referee imbroglio to make a case for kicking the president out of office.

"It reminds me of President Obama and the economy," Ryan said in Cincinnati. "If you can't get it right, it's time to get out. I half think that these refs work part-time for the Obama administration in the budget office. ... They're trying to pick the winners and losers, and they don't even do that very well."

Seattle won 14-12 over Green Bay after referees ruled a Seattle receiver caught the ball amid a pile of bodies in the end zone on the game's last play. The NFL conceded that a Seattle penalty in the course of the play went uncalled and cost the Packers the victory, but the league upheld the catch itself and the Seahawks' victory. Legions of football fans watched the play and the referees' call in disbelief, and buzzed about it all day Tuesday.

Typically, Obama, a diehard Chicago Bears enthusiast, is not one to wish the rival Green Bay Packers well.

But besides being an avid sports fan, Obama recently has redoubled efforts to win in the Packer's home state of Wisconsin. His campaign recently started airing ads in the state and Obama held a rally Saturday in Milwaukee, his first visit to the state since February.

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that Obama watched the Monday night game and "thinks there was a real problem with that call."

"He said that what happened in that game is why both sides need to come together, resolve their differences so that the regular refs can get back on the field so we can start focusing on a game that so many of us love rather than debating whether or not a game was won or lost because of a bad call," Carney said.

Obama said in a phone interview Tuesday with The Des Moines Register that he doesn't blame the replacement refs.

"They've been put in a tough situation," the president said. "But the fact is this is a fast, tough game to control. And it doesn't make sense to me for a league that's been so successful not to want to put their very best out there."

(AP) ? Faced with the daunting task of evaluating more than 34,000 drug cases handled by a Massachusetts chemist accused of misconduct, prosecutors and defense attorneys are starting with 1,140 cases of people who are already serving prison sentences based on potentially tainted evidence.

David Meier, a defense attorney and former prosecutor appointed to help sort through the legal quagmire created by the chemist's alleged actions, on Monday turned over a list of 690 people currently serving sentences in state prisons and 450 who are currently serving sentences in county jails. Samples in all of the cases were tested by chemist Annie Dookhan, who state police say failed to follow testing protocols and deliberately mishandled evidence in some cases.

Meier said it is unclear how many of those samples might have been tainted by Dookhan's actions, but said both sides want to deal first with people who are already in prison.

"That is our first priority, people who are presently incarcerated," he said.

Meier said lawyers in those cases will now have to work out resolutions on a case-by-case basis.

"The merits and any alleged issues in any one of those cases is for prosecutors and defense attorneys and judges to determine," he said.

State police have said Dookhan was involved in testing more than 60,000 drug samples involving about 34,000 defendants during her nine years at the Boston lab. Dookhan resigned in March during an internal investigation by the state Department of Public Health, which ran the lab until state police took over on July 1 as part of a budget directive.

Meier, who was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick last week, met Monday with a group of district attorneys, defense attorneys and public safety officials. After the meeting, Meier said he turned over a list of currently incarcerated defendants whose cases were worked on by Dookhan, either as the primary chemist, who performs an initial test on a drug sample, or as the secondary chemist, who performs a second, confirmatory test.

The list does not include thousands of people who are currently awaiting trial, are on probation or are serving federal sentences in cases in which Dookhan tested drug samples.

Since the lab was closed last month, judges in Suffolk and Norfolk counties have already begun to hear motions filed by defense attorneys seeking bail reductions for drug defendants awaiting trial in cases handled by Dookhan. Prosecutors have agreed to many of those motions, citing possibly tainted evidence.

Dookhan hasn't been charged, but the state attorney general's office is conducting a criminal investigation.

On Monday, a judge in Boston agreed to put the sentences of career criminal David Huffman on hold and set bail for him at $75,000 cash, with GPS monitoring. The 55-year-old Huffman had pleaded guilty in August to trafficking in heroin and cocaine, possession of oxycodone with the intent to distribute and unlawful possession of ammunition and a firearm as an armed career criminal He began serving concurrent seven- to 10-year sentences last month.

Huffman's lawyer, Bernard Grossberg, said the next step will likely be for the defense to ask that Huffman be allowed to withdraw his guilty plea.

"He would not have pleaded guilty to the gun charges if it was not part and parcel of his plea on the drug charges," Grossberg said.

Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley, said prosecutors opposed the motion to put his sentence on the gun charges on hold. He said the gun evidence was tested in a different lab and was unaffected by the drug lab scandal.

"This is an individual who's been involved in just about every type of property and violent crime over the course of 40 years. He is a mid-tier narcotics distributor and was a plague on the community," Wark said.

"We believe the judge should have treated the two cases separately," he said.

Dookhan has not responded to repeated requests for comment. Her father, Rasheed Khan, told The Associated Press that she had been "bullied and abused," but he would not say by whom.

"No one has heard her side of the story," Khan said outside his home in Kissimmee, Fla., on Saturday.

State police have said Dookhan failed to follow testing protocols and deliberately mishandled evidence in some cases.

In a letter sent to defense attorneys earlier this month, Max Stern, the president of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said he was told during a meeting with state officials that Dookhan was accused of deliberately tampering with evidence, including the weight of drug samples, which can affect the length of sentences given to drug defendants.

NMHC Releases 2012 Income/Expense Benchmarks for Student ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? September 25, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? As college and university enrollments have grown almost 40 percent in the past decade, squeezing schools? supply of on-campus housing, demand for private, off-campus student housing options is growing. Responding to that trend, the National Student Housing Council (NSHC) and the National Multi Housing Council (NMHC) today released their?2012 Off-Campus Student Housing Income and Expense Benchmarking Survey. The only such survey specifically targeting the off-campus student housing sector, it includes data on 370 properties from 25 companies in 46 states.

Key findings include:

  • As found in previous studies, off-campus student housing properties are continuing to lease predominantly ?by-the-bed,? with every student in an apartment responsible for his or her own lease. Properties in this survey that leased by-the-bed reported earning less per bed in rental income and spending larger percentages of their rental income on operating expenses than properties that lease by-the-unit, but this may be due to product mix (by-the-unit properties typically have two or more beds per unit). It is interesting to note that prior studies have shown that on a per property basis, more income is derived at properties that rent by-the-bed.
  • Late-fee income varies tremendously by property. For example, late-fee income ranged from $13.41 to $110.61 per bed for mid- to high-rise properties that leased by-the-bed. However, for garden-style properties that leased by-the-unit, late-fee income ranged from $22.26 to $114.26 per bed. A property?s location also factored into the late-fee income averages.

Data is provided by type of leasing structure; the report also breaks out the data results by property age, property type, property size and ownership/management structure. In addition to the general results, which provide the full aggregate data for all 46 states, the survey includes select regional results and state-level data for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.

The survey report is given complimentary to all attendees at the upcoming NMHC Student Housing Conference & Exposition, October 1-2 at the Arizona Biltmore, Phoenix, Ariz. Conference registration information is available at: http://www.nmhc.org/goto/SHC12reg.

It is also available for purchase by both NMHC and NAA members ($750) and nonmembers ($1,500). NMHC also offers a student housing research package, which gives purchasers access to all of the NMHC and NSHC annual student housing research reports. NMHC and NAA members pay $1,700 and nonmembers pay $2,500 for the package.

(AP) ? Uruguay's congress appeared ready on Tuesday to legalize abortion, a groundbreaking move in Latin America, where no country save Cuba has made abortions accessible to all women during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Compromises made to secure votes disappointed both sides of the abortion divide, which gathered in protest. Once it gets through Uruguay's lower house, the measure would go back to the Senate for approval of changes, but President Jose Mujica has said he will allow it to become law.

The measure would give women the right to a legal abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and decriminalize later-term abortions when the mother's life is at risk or when the fetus is so deformed that it wouldn't survive after birth. In cases of rape, abortions would be legal during the first 14 weeks.

The goal is to reduce the number of illegal abortions in Uruguay, Congressman Ivan Posada of the center-left Independent Party told his fellow lawmakers Tuesday. Posada wrote the measure and is expected to provide a key 50th vote against the opposition of 49 other lawmakers.

"They talk of 30,000 a year, a hypothetical number, but whatever the number is, it's quite dramatic for a country where 47,000 children are born each year," Posada explained earlier in an Associated Press interview.

A poll this month showed 52 percent of Uruguayans would vote to legalize abortion if the question were put to the people, while 34 percent would vote against it. The survey of 802 people nationwide by the CIFRA consulting firm had a 3.4 percentage point margin of error.

Compromises include requiring women seeking abortions to justify their request before a panel of at least three professionals ? a gynecologist, psychologist and social worker ? and listen to advice about alternatives including adoption and support services if should she decide to keep the baby.

Then, she must wait five more days "to reflect" on the consequences before the procedure.

"It's important that the woman who decides to have an abortion attend this meeting where she will be informed, where they'll explain all the options including alternatives that she is free to choose from," Posada told the AP.

The review panel should obtain the father's point of view, but only if the woman agrees. Women under 18 must show parental consent, but they can seek approval from a judge instead if they're unwilling or unable to involve their parents in the decision.

The measure also allows entire private health care institutions, as well as individual health care providers, to decline to perform abortions.

Such requirements raised objections from Amnesty International and other groups, which say layers of bureaucracy will create barriers and delay abortions until more than 12 weeks have passed, thus forcing women and health care providers into criminal territory.

"This is not the law for which we fought for more than 25 years," complained Marta Agunin, who directs Women and Health, a non-governmental organization in Uruguay.

Also opposed are Uruguay's Catholic and evangelical institutions, which along with public hospitals provide much of the available health care in Uruguay.

A statement from Uruguay's Catholic University says it makes no sense to punish a woman for killing a fetus that is 12 weeks and 1 day old, but to decriminalize abortions before then. Conservatives also object to the removal of a proposal to require the father's consent before any abortion.

Cuba, which decriminalizes abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, is the only country in Latin America where legal abortion is common. Argentina and Colombia allow it only in cases of rape or when the mother's life is endangered. Colombia also allows it when there is proof of fetal malformation. Mexico City has legalized first-trimester abortions, but there are restrictions in most other parts of the country.

Many countries ban abortions under any conditions.

Uruguay's lawmakers have no desire to make their country a destination for women from other countries seeking abortions. The measure says only Uruguayan citizens and women who can prove at least one year's residency can apply. "This is a solution for those who live here, not that Uruguay becomes a place that attracts people from other countries for this procedure," Posada told the AP.

Opposition Deputy Javier Garcia of the center-right National Party accused lawmakers of treating living embryos as if they were "disposable," which he equated with murder.

The margin for the law was razor-thin on Tuesday after Deputy Andres Lima of the ruling Broad Front coalition said he would refuse to vote. With Posada joining the coalition, the measure appeared headed for passage by a 50-49 vote margin.

Dr. Marie Gonzalez, bioethicist at the University of the Republic, called the measure "evil" and vowed to work to persuade her fellow gynecologists to refuse to perform the procedure if it becomes law.

"The embryo-fetus is a human being, and as such has rights, like the human right to live," she said.
