A few weeks ago I profiled Nezar Hamze, a Muslim activist and Republican in south Florida whose quest to join a local GOP committee prompted accusations that he is un-American and that Islam is incompatible with the Constitution.
Last night, the Broward Republican Executive Committee met to consider Hamze's application to become a voting member, a meeting that ended with him being called a "terrorist' by hecklers and an unprecedented 158-11 vote to deny him membership.
The usually perfunctory approval process for BREC?membership was changed at the meeting in order to publicly vet Hamze and to then vote on his application using a secret ballot. He was the only one of 11 candidates rejected.

Kaufman said loudly in the microphone. ?Will you denounce terrorism?"
Some Republicans told the Herald they objected to the fact that Hamze is the director of the Florida branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, citing the fact that CAIR was named an "unindicted co-conspirator" in a material support for terrorism case in Texas several years ago. The list of "co-conspirators" in that case -- which involved sending money to the Palestinian organization Hamas -- ran to more than 300 groups and individuals, none of whom were charged with breaking the law.
Joe Kaufman, who Hamze told me today appeared to be the leader of the effort to vote down his candidacy, is a former Republican Jewish Coalition official who now leads a group called Americans Against Hate. His ideology is perhaps best captured in a?eulogy he wrote for the extremist rabbi Meir Kahane.
Hamze, for his part, told me he rose at the meeting to respond to his critics, telling the crowd, "All of this terrorism stuff is garbage. I'm a law-abiding citizen. I follow the Constitution. I love my children. I love this country."
He plans to attend Broward Republican meetings as a member of the public.
"They can't stop me from attending the meetings. I believe I can accomplish my goals of helping the party and introducing a Muslim Republican to candidates so they know Muslim Republicans are out there," he said.

As Byron York of the Washington Examiner noted, there is a possibility that Cain might benefit from Perry's loss of support. Before Cain volunteers received fresh supplies of Cain paraphernalia that afternoon, some had been handing out pins they unclipped and stickers they peeled off of their own clothes.
Delegates who spoke to The Ticket before the straw poll cited two primary reasons for switching their vote: Perry's trouble countering former Massachusetts Gov. "He's taking jabs at his own base," said Lisa Mathews, who came from Dallas, Texas to attend the debate. "Nobody likes to be told they don't have a heart."
Even those who were sympathetic to Perry on immigration took issue with his handling of the exchange.
"He fell flat," said Karin Hoffman, a delegate from Broward County, Fla. "He had this perfect opportunity but it was almost like the wind was totally knocked out of him."
Of course, Perry went into the debate with strong support among Florida Republicans, so there's always the chance that he'll go on to win the straw poll.
The Republican Party of Florida has organized four straw polls since 1979, and every winner has gone on to take the nomination.

I love coffee but 8 cups a day is excessive - sorry, but I prefer to be honest! I would be thinking of cutting back in order to preserve good adrenal function - coffee promotes the release of adrenalin, and doing it on such a regular basis at that level isn't natural. You risk burning out your adrenals, it's not something one can easily bounce back from either. The other effect of coffee at that amount is hallucinations - I don't have a ref but there was a study conducted about this just in the last few months. I get high anxiety if I overdo coffee, my tolerance is low at the moment. But, speaking from experience, it can have a detrimental effect on mental health ay different doses for different people. |

I find it hard to find reliable studies about coffee, and I suspect it's because it's such a money industry and because people are so addicted to it. My experience is that too much coffee taxes your adrenals and it's harsher on the system than tea. I have to stick to decaf because just one full-caf cup and I'll have to drag myself out of bed the next day and I get zits on my chin. (Some people's adrenals are more resilient.) I can drink 3-4 cups of green tea in a day though and not have the same problem. |

"We would not be here today at this very precipice of such a dangerous move if the Obama policy in the Middle East wasn't naive and arrogant, misguided and dangerous," Perry said in a speech in New York. "The Obama policy of moral equivalency which gives equal standing to the grievances of Israelis and Palestinians, including the orchestrators of terrorism, is a very dangerous insult."
In a statement before Perry spoke, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney also waded into the tense foreign policy dispute over Mideast policy. He called the jockeying at the United Nations this week "an unmitigated disaster." He accused Obama's administration of "repeated efforts over three years to throw Israel under the bus and undermine its negotiating position."
Perry also criticized Obama's stated goal that any negotiations should be based on the borders Israel had before a 1967 war that expanded the Jewish state. While the 1967 borders have been the basis for diplomatic negotiations, they have never been embraced before by a U.S. president. Perry called that stance "insulting and naive."
Perry's remarks came as the Obama administration has redoubled its efforts to block the Palestinian bid. The U.S. has promised a veto in the Security Council, but the Palestinians can press for a more limited recognition of statehood before the full ? and much more supportive ? General Assembly.
Perry also expressed support for allowing Jewish settlements to be constructed on the West Bank, a practice Obama has asked the Israeli government to cease. And Perry said that the entire city of Jerusalem should be part of Israel, a move that would make key religious and historical sites part of the Jewish state. Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordan in 1967.
Perry even suggested he would move American diplomatic personnel out of Tel Aviv and instead recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. "As the president of the United States, if you want to work for the State Department, you will be working in Jerusalem," he said.
Romney said the policy of limiting Israel's negotiating flexibility "must stop now." He called on Obama to unequivocally reaffirm the U.S. commitment to Israel's security and a promise to cut foreign assistance to the Palestinians if they succeed in getting U.N. recognition.
Both Perry and Romney said the U.S. should reconsider funding for the U.N. itself if the global body votes to recognize the Palestinian Authority.
The GOP presidential hopefuls are intent on standing strongly behind Israel, an effort to appeal to Jewish voters and donors who play a pivotal role in presidential elections. It's also an effort to reach evangelical Christians, who play a key role in the Republican primary process and who support Israel for theological reasons.
Perry on Tuesday said that his own Christian faith is part of his support for Israel.
"I also as a Christian have a clear directive to support Israel, so from my perspective it's pretty easy," Perry said when a reporter asked if Perry's faith was driving his views. "Both as an American and as a Christian, I am going to stand with Israel."
Complaints about Obama's Israel policy helped a Republican, Bob Turner, win a special election in a heavily Jewish and Democratic New York congressional district last week. Turner appeared with Perry at the speech.
"It's vitally important for America to preserve alliances with leaders who seek to preserve peace and stability in the region," Perry said. "But today, neither adversaries nor allies know where America stands. Our muddle of a foreign policy has created great uncertainty in the midst of the Arab Spring."
Obama is also in New York on Tuesday for meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly. He planned to meet later in the week with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

LONDON (Reuters) ? Scientists have found a way to prevent HIV from damaging the immune system and say their discovery may offer a new approach to developing a vaccine against AIDS.
Researchers from the United States and Europe working in laboratories on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) found it is unable to damage the immune system if cholesterol is removed from the virus's membrane.
"It's like an army that has lost its weapons but still has flags, so another army can recognize it and attack it," said Adriano Boasso of Imperial College London, who led the study.
The team now plans to investigate how to use this way of inactivating the virus and possibly develop it into a vaccine.
Usually when a person becomes infected with HIV, the body's innate immune response puts up an immediate defense. But some researchers believe HIV causes the innate immune system to overreact. This weakens the immune system's next line of defense, known as the adaptive immune response.
For this study -- published on Monday in the journal Blood -- Boasso's team removed cholesterol from the membrane around the virus and found that this stopped HIV from triggering the innate immune response. This in turn led to a stronger adaptive response, orchestrated by a type of immune cells called T cells.
AIDS kills around 1.8 million people a year worldwide. An estimated 2.6 million people caught HIV in 2009, and 33.3 million people are living with the virus.
Major producers of current HIV drugs include Gilead Bristol Myers Squibb, Merck, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline.
Scientists from companies, non-profits and governments around the world have been trying for many years to make a vaccine against HIV but have so far had only limited success.
A 2009 study in Thailand involving 16,000 volunteers showed for the first time that a vaccine could prevent HIV infection in a small number of people, but since the efficacy was only around 30 percent researchers were forced back to the drawing board.
An American team working on an experimental HIV vaccine said in May that it helped monkeys with a form of the AIDS virus control the infection for more than a year, suggesting it may lead to a vaccine for people.
HIV is spread in many ways -- during sex, on needles shared by drug users, in breast milk and in blood -- so there is no single easy way to prevent infection. The virus also mutates quickly and can hide from the immune system, and attacks the very cells sent to battle it.

Working with scientists Johns Hopkins University, the University of Milan and Innsbruck University, Boasso's team found that if cholesterol is removed from HIV's envelope, it can no longer activate pDCs. As a result, T cells, which orchestrate the adaptive response, can fight the virus more effectively.

Asked if Perry can defeat Obama, Fasano, who hasn?t yet endorsed, said ?I don?t know? three times before becoming more expansive.
?My concern is if it?s a close race and seniors start looking at a guy who has expressed doing away with Social Security or calling it a ?Ponzi scheme? ? that? s a little bit of an insult to seniors who have worked most of their lives for that money,? he said.
Even as they jab each other over differences on Social Security and health care, Perry and Romney have begun directly addressing the macro debate.
?We don?t need to elect a nominee who?s going to blur lines between this administration and the Republican Party,? Perry said last week in Richmond, Va., at a fundraiser for the state GOP. ?We need a nominee who draws a distinct and a clear contrast. And I will tell you one thing, President Obama and I have a clear contrast.?
In an interview on Sean Hannity?s radio show earlier this month, Romney held up Perry?s past critiques of Social Security to illustrate the risk of picking the Texan.
?If we nominate someone who the Democrats could correctly characterize as being against Social Security, we would be obliterated as a party,? the former Massachusetts governor warned.

WASHINGTON ? Doubling down on his economic agenda, President Barack Obama on Saturday kept up his appeal for public support of his $447 billion proposal to boost jobs and consumer spending, calling on Americans to press Congress to pass the legislation and insisting, "No more division or delay."
In his weekly radio and Internet address, the president reiterated a message that has become a central focus of his presidency amid stubbornly high unemployment numbers and dipping approval over his handling of the economy.
The president announced his jobs legislation to a joint session of Congress last week and has since gone outside Washington to build a case for its passage. He has been to Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina.
"The No. 1 issue for the people I meet is how we can get back to a place where we're creating good, middle-class jobs that pay well and offer some security," he said.
His address Saturday came in the face of sobering public opinion ratings for the president. A New York Times/CBS News poll released Friday showed nearly half of those surveyed worried the economy was headed for another recession and nearly three out of four said they believe the country is on the wrong track.
The president's job proposal would reduce payroll taxes on workers, cut them in half for most businesses and offer incentives for employers to hire. It also would spend tens of billions of dollars on new public works projects, extend unemployment benefits for long-term jobless and help states and localities avoid layoffs of teachers and emergency workers.
On Monday, Obama plans to spell out a long-term debt stabilizing plan that aims to cut the deficit by about $2 trillion over 10 years. Obama is making his proposal to a special congressional committee that has been charged with lowering deficit by $1.2 trillion to $1.5 trillion.
"But right now, we've got to get Congress to pass this jobs bill," Obama said.
Obama's jobs plan has received a tepid reception from Republicans. But his proposal to pay for the plan with limits on tax deductions and closing corporate tax loopholes is facing stiff GOP resistance.
In the Republican address, Rep. Peter Roskam of Illinois called on Obama to reduce regulations on businesses, saying government agency rules were choking off hiring. "Washington has become a red tape factory," he said.
He acknowledged Obama's controversial decision to scrub a clean-air regulation that aimed to reduce health-threatening smog. "He can cancel more," Roskam said.
He pressed Obama to push the Democratic-controlled Senate to adopt House Republican initiatives, including legislation that would give Congress veto power over certain high-cost regulations.
"Job creators should be able to focus on their work - not on Washington's busy-work," he said.

CANBERRA, Australia ? Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Tuesday that she will discuss the global economy and Afghanistan war when she hosts Barack Obama during his first visit to Australia as U.S. president in November .
The White House confirmed Obama will travel to Australia on Nov. 16-17. The trip is in connection with the 60th anniversary of a security treaty between the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.
"The president's visit will be an important opportunity to renew our close ties and take forward shared objectives, including restoring the health of the global economy and promoting growth and jobs, planning for transition in Afghanistan and developing strong institutions which can help address the region's political, security and economic challenges," Gillard said in a statement.
Gillard described the United States as Australia's closest ally and partner. The United States is Australia's largest source of foreign investment and third largest two-way trading partner.
"The alliance is fundamental to Australia's security and a cornerstone of stability in the Asia-Pacific region," she said of the security treaty which was invoked near its 50th anniversary after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
Australia responded by sending combat troops to back the U.S.-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Some 1,550 Australian troops remain in Afghanistan, the largest military contribution of any country outside NATO and the 10th largest overall.
Obama had made plans to travel to Australia last year, but the trip was canceled twice ? once so Obama could stay in Washington to lobby for his health care overhaul and a second time because of the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The trips had been scheduled before Gillard overthrew her predecessor Kevin Rudd in an internal government coup in June last year.
The Australian visit will follow Obama chairing a summit of Asia-Pacific leaders in his home state of Hawaii. From Australia, he will fly to the Indonesian resort island of Bali to attend an eastern Asia-focussed summit.
U.S. Ambassador to Australia Jeffrey Bleich said details in the president's itinerary in Australia had yet to be finalized.
